Internet Technology Summit, Tampa, FL August 2009Yesterday I participated in the first Internet & Technology Summit in my backyard – Tampa, FL. I travel around the country to similar events so it was a pleasure to drive 30 minutes from my home to a quality event.

The producer of the this event is David Glass, a local entrepreneur. David is a well known publisher of print and onlineDavid Glass media outlets which focus on business and technology in Florida. The event began at 7:30 am and ran until almost 1pm. In addition to a great line up of speakers, more than twenty sponsors exhibited. About 300 people attended the event made up of small and mid-size business executives and a healthy showing of local entrepreneurs. Here are some highlights of the event.

Brent BrittonBrent Britton (attorney 2.0) kicked off and hosted the event, serving as the emcee throughout the morning.  Brent is uniquely gifted in this role. His wit and style of humor combined with his edgy and geeky intellect make him a model emcee for technology events. Brent’s introductory remarks provided anticipation for the content, learning experience and networking opportunities for the enthusiastic attendees. He kept the pace moving and the audience engaged.

Mike Volpe, V.P. of Inbound Marketing at HubSpot was the keynote speaker. Mike set the tone for the event with an inspiring presentation which challenges the status quo of marketing. Below is an excerpt of Mike’s keynote.

Internet & Technology Summit Video 2 from Tampa Bay CEO Magazine on Vimeo.

There were three topical tracks with panel based speakers on each topic. The tracks were:

Social Media/Search Marketing
Speakers: Bernie Borges, Kevin Hourigan, Guy Hagen

Search and Social Media Panel

Mobile & Web Application Development Trends
Speakers: Jody Haneke, Greg Schmitzer, Bradley Blanken

Mobile Web Panel

Rich Media & Application Development Innovations
Jennifer Bakunas, Heidi Kempf, Greg Wilson, Sean Carey

Rich Media Panel

Quote of the day: “I’d rather be a developer acting like a marketing guy than a marketing guy acting like a developer.” Greg Wilson, Adobe Systems

Clearly, there is a hunger in our community for technology business conferences to discuss the impact of innovative technologies, best practices and ideas among business leaders and entrepreneurs. I think we’ll see more events like this in Tampa in the future.

Wow. What a great event! I enjoyed meeting everyone as well as listening to all the presentations. I learned a few things and thought there was some great discussion. Hopefully I can make it out to the next event!

I attended the conference and really enjoyed the day. The Intercontinental is gorgeous and provided a great setting.

The presentations were very good, offering a wide range of information and drilling down into detail on a few key items. I enjoyed the panel approach, with multiple speakers sharing about a topic, followed by Q&A.

I'm not necessarily the target demographic of the event, so I was attending to get an understanding of how the tech community shares information with the business leaders in our area. It was a great experience.

I love Tampa Bay and I hope to see many more events in our area. I definitely agree that there is a need and a desire for more events related to tech applications in business.

What a great turn out and what great content on Tuesday throughout the entire morning. I heard many attendees comment on the take away value being a 10 out of 10.

    On August 27, 2009 at 10:02 am

Our panel hit all the right points, 1-2-3 as if we had planned it that way. It was a pleasure sharing the podium with you and Kevin.

The Summit as a whole had great attendance and great energy, and all the speakers were on-topic and very relevant. It was one of the better tech conferences that I've been to in some time, and the proof was in the networking that went on during and after.

I've posted my presentation deck on social media/strategy and intel on my blog, as well as a graph I generated by mining the conversation around the #internetsummit hashtag at http://bit.ly/CvVsB

Amazing conference with really great presenters and insightful information. I think this summit will only get bigger and better. Thanks to David Glass and his efforts in organizing and bringing together a great group of presenters that targeted many aspects of the future regarding internet and technology.

Not only did I greatly enjoy the conference, but there were plenty of great little gems – well worth the time!

Plus, I agree that the Central Florida tech community can benefit from more events like this. We have such great tech leaders here, including Bernie Borges. He is such a forward-thinker – I'm still loving the concept of "Not SEO but SO"

It was my privilege to provide interstitial commentary for such a powerful and relevant group of speakers. *Everyone* on the stage hit a home run.

David Glass, we look forward to the next one!

What a great event this was! I enjoyed listening to the very informative presentations. It was also great to meet Mike Volpe for the first time, having watched him on Hubspot TV every Friday for some time now.

I look forward to the next event!

I'd like to thank everyone who attended the first of what I hope to be many programs to come on technology and innovation in the Tampa Bay region. I've gotten tremendous feedback since the summit on the level of speakers and valuable content provided.

I'd personally like to thank Bernie Borges, Brent Britton and Jody Haneke for their advice in shaping the program and Mike Volpe for coming down from Boston to keynote this program.

I'd also like to thank all of our speakers for their valuable time including Guy Hagan, Kevin Hourigan, Greg Schmitizer, David Rajala, Greg Wilson, Heidi Kempf, Jennifer Bakunas and Sean Carey.

The summit would not have been possible with out the support of our sponsors: Verizon, HubSpot, Haneke Design, Robert Half Technology, Magnetic, Atlantic.net, Gray Robinson P.A, System Soft Technologies, Bayshore Solutions, Doterati, Whaleback Systems, TechVenture Conference 2009, HD Interactive, The Print Concierge, Tampa Bay CEO Magazine, 1:1 Media Solutions, Find and Convert, KDM Design & Marketing, TechLoaf Tampa Bay, Ren Scott Productions and TEK Systems.

Internet & Technology Summit 2010 is planned for late spring next year. I'll be announcing dates in the coming weeks.

Great event. There were several A-ha moments which made the event a worthwhile endeavor. I am looking forward to taking some the ideas I came away with and implementing them.

Well done, well put together, and well attended, what more can you ask for in an event?

Great event! Loved the social media discussions and presentations. Very up-to-date on current online marketing strategies and tactics.

Had a great time and learned alot! Liked the fact it was done so early and we were able to get back to work for the rest of the day. Very interesting and relevent topics to what we do everyday. Funny thing is, we have been having the same discussions about SEO and Social Network, with similar conclusions around our office for months, it was nice to have our opinions validated by our peers.

    Thanks!

Cant wait till the next one! We'd love to sponsor!

  17. by Don Forrester

    On August 28, 2009 at 6:45 pm

    I attended, and loved it.

There wasn't much new for me during the first panel for the strategy/tactics/analytics portion, but a lot of the videos and sites used to illustrate points found their way into my bookmarks, and I've been showing them at the office. Plus, I've been using Hubspot's Grader.com for a while, and it was a neat thing to meet and watch one of the people behind the website.

The second and third panels did have a lot of new information, and I ended up with 10-11 pages of notes. The Adobe and HD interactive presentations were especially mind-blowing.

Thanks to everybody involved for showing that Tampa has some real juice in web technology, and some amazing people leading the pack!

This event gave our team something to use as a baseline for focusing and refining our marketing efforts. It is so important to keep up with the current trends in technology, without letting them take over the entire campaign! The most outstanding concept I came away with began with the continuous mention of strategy without tactics and tactics without strategy, and how one without the other eventually leads to wasted time and money. Thanks so much for all the valuable input and information!

Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic nevertheless I'd figured I'd ask. Would you be interested in exchanging links or maybe guest authoring a blog article or vice-versa? My blog goes over a lot of the same subjects as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each other. If you happen to be interested feel free to send me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Superb blog by the way!

“Bernie is a fantastic speaker, and if you are looking for someone to present at your event, he should be one of your top choices. His presentations are interesting and informative, and leverage all of his hands on experience in inbound marketing. His book "Marketing 2.0" is a great overview of where marketing is going, and includes a number of compelling case studies. Bernie is a thought leader, and the book is proof of that (which is why I wrote the foreword to the book!). I have invited Bernie
to speak at events I have organized, and I will do so again in the future.”avatar
