Business Blogs - Web 2.0 Internet Marketing Strategies

Blogs are not new. But, just in case you need a definition, a blog (short for weblog) is an online conversation between the host and an audience of people who participate. Blog posts are displayed in a chronological and topical format. A more formal definition of a blog is available here.

For about the last three years Business blogs have been adopted very rapidly by corporations around the globe. The media attention given to blogging for business includes BusinessWeek, Fortune, Smart Company, Wired and even People and Entertainment Weekly. In May 2005 BusinessWeek's front cover story said it best: "Blogs will change your business....Your customers and rivals are figuring blogs out. Our advice, catch up...or catch you later."

Business blogging allows you to listen to what people are saying about your products, your brand, your employees, your partners, your vendors, your competitors, your marketing and all at lightning speed!

When information is posted in a blog by a community of constituents, such information can be incredibly valuable. The knowledge you gain allows you to react in "Internet speed" by learning something in hours versus days or weeks. Consider the impact blogging for business can have on your competitive advantage.

The volume of bloggers on the Internet is staggering. Blog content is the fastest growing form of content on the web with an estimated 100 plus million bloggers. If you think most of them are predicting Paris Hilton's career plans, think again.

Blogging for business can be done at two levels. A business can sponsor a blog, e.g., http://googleblog.blogspot.com. And, individuals within a business can sponsor a blog, notably CEO's and thought leaders, e.g., http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/.

Companies across all industries are using the blogosphere as a platform to communicate. Blogs form communities of people who have something to say on topics of interest. Sometimes, blog posts can be negative but if negative comments are well founded, wouldn't you rather know sooner than later so you can react?

While there are numerous valuable reasons to blog for business, we can not overlook one other reason to blog, namely Internet Marketing. Search engines like blog content because the content is frequently updated. Search engines index blog content frequently and rapidly.  Business blog posts which use your company name, product names or keywords relevant to your products, will produce links which search engines consider to be "important." So, blogging for business can also help you improve search engine optimization results through improved search engine rankings, as well as providing many other business benefits.
